Neighborhood

Esperanza is the heart of Vieques. Sometimes it is quiet, and you can hear the coqui frogs. Other nights it is extremely lively with the sounds of local music filling the air and horses galloping up and down the street. Locals and visitors congregate on the Malecon to watch sunset over the bay, dance salsa, share a little gossip or sip a cold beverage. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are always upbeat as the weekend arrives and all the locals and visitors head to Esperanza to dance to the loud music. Esperanza Bay has a small slip of sand for sunbathing with crystal clear water. One of the best beaches, Sun Bay, is only a 20-minute walk along the beach. Puertas is within steps of the many excellent restaurants, several hopping bars, eclectic shopping, entertaining water sports activities and of course the most important of all, the meeting points for the magical Bioluminescent Bay Tours. Esperanza is very walk-able and right on the sea. We recommend renting a car for at least a few days so you can explore all that Vieques has to offer including remote, deserted beaches and the town of Isabel II. Publicos (shared transportation) and Taxis are available. Our "Isla Nena" (as she is affectionately known) has a surprising amount of activities and countless moments to do absolutely nothing but relax.
